Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition

With the iPad 5 likely just around the corner, Samsung has announced the pricing and availability of the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition. The pen-enabled tablet will go on sale Oct. 10 for $549, $50 more than Apple?s current slate.

What do you get for that premium? A smaller and lighter design with a textured and stitched back cover, a high-resolution 2560 x 1600-pixel display and a quad-core Exynos processor for serious multitasking. But the main differentiator continues to be the S Pen, which gets a bunch of new features.?

MORE:Apple iPad 5 Rumors: 5 Things to Expect

As we shared in our first hands-on with the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition, Samsung has done a lot of work on making the S Pen more useful. A new Air Command gesture, activated by pressing a button on the pen while hovering just above the screen, gives you quick access to multiple features. Action Memo lets you take notes and act on them quickly because it recognizes things like phone numbers and addresses. You?ll also find a Scrapbooking feature, Screen Write and S Finder, which lets you search handwritten notes.?

The second-generation Note 10.1 also runs circles around the iPad when it comes to multitasking. An enhanced Multi Window feature lets you run two apps side by side and drag content from one window to the other. With the new Pen Window, you can even run a third app on the screen by drawing a shape on the screen and then selecting the app you want to run in that window, such as the calculator.

By working with Flipboard, Samsung is also introducing a new interface called My Magazine. By swiping up from the bottom of the screen (with the pen or your finger) you can access your news and social feeds. Its similar to HTC?s BlinkFeed but even more robust.

Zimbabwe poachers kill 80 elephants with cyanide

HARARE (Reuters) - Zimbabwe has launched a crackdown on ivory poachers who have killed more than 80 elephants by poisoning water holes with cyanide, endangering one of the world's biggest herds, a minister said on Wednesday.

Environment minister Saviour Kasukuwere said the elephants had died in the last few weeks in the Hwange national park, the southern African nation's largest, while security forces were preoccupied with a July 31 general election.

Police and rangers had recovered 19 tusks, cyanide and wire snares after a sweep through villages close to the park, which lies just south of Victoria Falls, he said.

"We are declaring war on the poachers," he told Reuters. "We are responding with all our might because our wildlife, including the elephants they are killing, are part of the natural resources and wealth that we want to benefit the people of Zimbabwe."

Zimbabwe is home to some of Africa's largest herds, with half of its estimated 80,000 elephants thought to be in Hwange.

Kasukuwere, who was only appointed to the environment ministry a week ago, said he would push for stiff penalties for convicted poachers, who routinely get less than the 9-year jail term imposed for cattle rustling.

Zimbabwe is on a drive to revive its tourism industry, including its wildlife sector, which has been suffering years of decline blamed on long-serving President Robert Mugabe's economic policies.

Mugabe and his ZANU-PF party, in power since the former Rhodesia gained independence from Britain in 1980, was re-elected in a election in July that was rejected by his main rivals as rigged.

One Direction's Harry Styles and Niall Horan Play Golf, Shirtless Liam Payne Hits the Pool

The boys of One Direction are living it up in Australia!

Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik are currently Down Under for their 24 sold-out concerts in Oz and New Zealand, but when they're not onstage, they're getting in some R&R.

On Sunday, Sept. 22, Harry and Niall played some golf on their hotel's course. Harry, 19, wore a dark Adidas ensemble paired with a slouchy gray beret, while Niall, 20, looked cute in all white paired with a Yankees cap. He also appeared to be wearing a knee brace on each knee, but it didn't look like that hindered his game.

PHOTOS: This Is Us movie pics

Meanwhile, Liam, 20, showed off his sexy, shirtless chest in the pool. Wearing a pair of Nike swim trunks, he played a game of some sort with a small rubber ball.

But on Monday, Sept. 23, it was time to hit the stage! The boys put on a great show at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, but there was one minor hiccup. During a performance of "Kiss You," Louis, 21, slipped on some water and fell hard. It certainly looked painful, but the boy-bander laughed it off and got right back to performing.

    Impressive!

Jamie Dupree's Washington Insider: Budget, shutdown debate shifts to Senate

If Republicans are going to defund the Obama health law as part of a stop gap budget plan, they will have to find some Democrats to support that idea in the Senate; but a review of Democratic Senators finds few who might be inclined to join that GOP cause.

Think of it this way - only two of 200 broke ranks last Friday in the House to join Republicans in voting for a stop gap budget that targets the Obama health reform law.

That's only 1% of Democrats in the House; in the Senate, Republicans would need about 10% of the 54 Democrats to preserve provisions that block money for the health law.

That seems like an almost impossible task.

GOP lawmakers have focused mainly on Democrats in Red states who are up for re-election in 2014, but it's hard to see those numbers translating into votes against the signature legislative achievement of President Obama.

One name Republicans often float is that of Sen. Mary Landrieu of Louisiana. But her words provide a much different conclusion.

"If I had to vote for the bill again, I would vote for it tomorrow," Landrieu said of the health law in an August appearance in her home state.

Other Republicans say Sen. Mark Begich of Alaska would be a prime candidate to go against the Obama health law. He laughed at that suggestion from reporters last week.

"If you think it's going to get repealed, whoever tells you that isn't giving you the truth," Begich said at a town hall meeting in Anchorage in August.

Both Landrieu and Begich are up for re-election in 2014. But their knees are not getting wobbly on the issue of Obamacare.

Frankly, it's hard to find any Democrat who might be open to voting to defund the Obama health law in the Senate, even when you look at the list of seats open in 2014.

Yes, polling shows the law is not popular, especially with Republicans and Independents.

But those same polls also routinely show that Democrats remain in favor of the plan.

One of the biggest GOP election targets next year is Sen. Mark Pryor of Arkansas - but his statements back in his home state show no hint of him backing away from the Obama health law.

"It actually is working in a lot of ways," Pryor said in an August interview with KARK-TV.

So, as the Senate begins debate on the health law on Monday, it may well be that Democrats will strip out the provisions blocking money for the Obama health law, and send the funding bill back to the House.

And even some stalwart opponents know the GOP is going uphill right now on the issue.

"I'm acknowledging we can't probably defeat or get rid of Obamacare," Sen Rand Paul (R-KY) said on Sunday at a meeting of Republicans in Michigan. "But by starting with our position of not funding it, maybe we get to a position where we make it less bad."

    Stay tuned.

OSU football Q&A: What's in store in wake of SI report?

By KELLY HINES World Sports Writer on Sep 22, 2013, at 2:38 AM??Updated on 9/22/13 at 3:51 AM

Nearly a week has passed since the conclusion of Sports Illustrated's five-part "Dirty Game" expos? on Oklahoma State football.

While the widespread allegations are no longer drawing attention on the national scene, it's far from over in Stillwater. Up next is an independent investigation, which will take an unknown amount of time.

What else is in store? Here are some questions and answers moving forward.

Why is it important for OSU to avoid NCAA probation?

Of course, there are all the obvious reasons, including dodging sanctions.

But, from a big-picture standpoint, the OSU football program needs to show it has broken free from a cycle.

In the past, periods of success were followed by periods of trouble with the NCAA. A Big Eight co-championship in 1976 was followed by probation from 1978-81. Immediately after a 10-win season in 1988, the Cowboys were handed what has been called the second-most severe probation (trailing SMU's "death penalty") in college football history.

OSU suffered eight consecutive losing seasons after the most recent probation. The Cowboys are hopeful the biggest damage suffered this time will be in the public relations department.

Former defensive coordinator Bill Young was contacted by the Tulsa World last week and said this: "The bottom line is I am proud of the Oklahoma State program. I think we tried to do everything the right way."

On Sept. 11, OSU president Burns Hargis released an audio statement in which he reminded fans and alumni "that we have a strong and abiding commitment to playing by the rules and we do everything we can to be sure that happens. But if for some reason it doesn't, then we have to take swift and sure action and that's what we are going to do.

"But I have a lot of confidence in our current players and really many of our former players and our coaches at OSU. They understand what the standard is - it is to do the best you can playing by the rules. We want to win, but we don't want to win the wrong way."

Could the allegations in the report affect recruiting?

After practice Thursday, Cowboy coaches were free to hit the road and go recruiting because of an open date. They are able to visit schools and watch tape and talk with coaches, etc., but cannot have face-to-face visits with prospects because this isn't the proper contact period for that.

While no one at OSU is talking to the media, it is known that assistant coaches and head coach Mike Gundy got in touch with recruits in the wake of the Sports Illustrated project. None of the 20 previously committed recruits have announced a change of heart.

"It really sounds like Oklahoma State's coaching staff has done a great job of communicating what's going on, where things are going," Rivals.com regional recruiting analyst Jason Howell said. "And they've also developed these relationships over time, so there's a trust factor between a lot of those coaches and recruits.

"From everything I've heard, the perception of Oklahoma State really hasn't been damaged too much."

Dylan Harding, a Scout.com three-star safety from Jenks, said he is still "extremely happy and excited" about his commitment to OSU, despite the allegations.

"I didn't pay too close attention to it because no major decisions have been made (by the university as a result)," Harding said. "But it's something I'm not worried about at the time."

Broken Arrow four-star linebacker Gyasi Akem, who has been committed to the Cowboys since April, also said the Sports Illustrated report has had no effect on his perception of the program.

Will the university's response help restore its reputation?

Three days before the first installment was published, OSU issued a statement saying the university would investigate the allegations and was committed to "playing by the rules."

That proactive move earned the approval of sports public relations expert Stephen Dittmore, an associate professor at Arkansas, as did the website ( tulsaworld.com/OSUresponse) created to house OSU's media releases and video statements tied to the investigation.

"OSU was in the unenviable position of not being able to deny the allegations, nor wanting to apologize for specific allegations," Dittmore said. "When a news outlet spends nearly a year researching a story, it is impossible for the organization under investigation to respond to each allegation in a timely manner.

"The best OSU could hope for was some balance and context in the SI stories, which SI did not provide. Given that lack of balance, I think OSU has done as well as it could have."

The athletic department, including Gundy, has not addressed in detail the allegations and instead has left comments to university spokesmen and officials, who announced Monday the hiring of Chuck Smrt as independent investigator.

"The consistent message from President (Burns) Hargis and other administrators has been to demonstrate a concern for the nature of the allegations by immediately identifying an independent review to determine what claims have merit, while simultaneously protecting current players and staff," Dittmore said.

What's the best thing to happen because of the SI project?

Everyone gets to take a look in the mirror and see if they can do better.

Before the first chapter of the series was unveiled, athletic director Mike Holder made it clear that if things are wrong, he wants to fix them.

"We're all committed to playing by the rules and doing things the right way, and for people to say that is not what's happening is very disturbing," he said. "Our goal is to separate fact from fiction, and then we can start dealing with it."

Holder braced OSU fans that they were in for a "rough few days" as the series was released. They read about allegations related to money, academics, drugs and sex.

"But we hope to make you proud of the way that we deal with it and how we stood up, didn't make any excuses and didn't try to cover anything up," Holder said. "I'm the guy in charge. Ultimately, the buck stops at my door, and I'm ready to accept responsibility for whatever is being said."

Imagination Tech confident on full year after licensing wins

LONDON (Reuters) - Imagination Technologies, the British graphics supplier to Apple, said that its royalty growth in the last quarter continued to be strong, which combined with steady licensing, gave it confidence in its outlook.

The group was boosted last week by the signing of an multi-year deal with chipmaker MediaTek. Its shares reached a three-month high of 349.5 pence on Monday.

The progress on licensing to date and the current sales pipeline support the existing guidance of 30-35 million pounds ($48-$56 million) of licensing revenue, excluding the MIPS business it acquired last year, Imagination said on Tuesday.

"Our strong technology base, partner engagements, design wins achieved, and growing opportunities, give me confidence that we will continue our planned progress," Chief Executive Hossein Yassaie said in a statement.

'American Idol' 'dream team' judges announced

"American Idol" has assembled its "dream team" of judges for season 13, the show announced on Tuesday ? and they number only three: Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and judging table newcomer Harry Connick, Jr.?

Randy Jackson, who has been with the show since its first season, will now serve as an "in-house mentor," the show said in a news release. Host Ryan Seacrest remains in his usual spot.

Connick, Jr. had been rumored for some time as the panel's likely new judge; he's a familiar face on the show, having appeared several times as both mentor and performer. ?

"I have always been a huge fan of 'American Idol,' and really enjoyed my time as a mentor on the show," Connick, Jr. said in a statement. "And I am honored that they've asked me to be a judge this season. As an entertainer, I am truly excited to bring my perspective to 'American Idol,' and to help emerging performers find their way."

Lopez was part of "Idol" in 2011, but did not participate last season.?

Jackson,?who had said he was leaving the show in May, is an unexpected return. "Surprise, surprise!" he said in a statement. "I am so happy to be back as part of this amazing show that started it all. "Season 13 is the place to be. The original talent show is back with a vengeance and ready to discover the best talent in America."

Urban, meanwhile, will experience his second season at the judges' table. "I think this season of 'Idol' is gonna be a blast," he said in a statement. "New team, new energy and a whole new field of artists to be discovered and given a chance!"

The trio who will make up the judges' panel this upcoming season is a trimming-back; last season the four-person panel included Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj, neither of whom are returning. Season 12 was a tough one for "Idol," which suffered from lower ratings, few breakout artists and the public ouster in June of longtime executive producers Nigel Lythgoe and Ken Warwick.?

Auditions this season will be held in Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Detroit, Omaha, Salt Lake City and San Francisco. Production with the judges begins in Boston on Sept. 3, and season 13 debuts on Fox in January.
